Sara's Story Sara tried telling her mom what “Grandpa” was doing to her, but Mom didn’t understand. “Grandpa,” a close family friend, was sexually abusing Sara every time he visited. Ten months later, Sara’s little sister witnessed “Grandpa’s” sexual assault. Together the girls described to their mom what was happening. Safe Passage helped Sara begin to heal. Through Safe Passage, Sara was able to talk about what had happened, and she received access to counseling and a medical exam. A Safe Passage Advocate prepared Sara for going to court and stayed by her side through the proceedings. Working with children through age 18 and their families, Safe Passage focuses on the Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak region. Our mission is to help children suffering from sexual abuse begin to heal. Our multidisciplinary approach brings together professionals from all areas to reduce trauma to children and their families while supporting their needs. How We Can Help Forensic Interviews Safe Passage’s onsite forensic interviewers and state-of-the-art videotaping minimize trauma for the child while maximizing information gathered. We also reduce the risk for contamination of the interview for a potential trial. Forensic Medical Exams Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) can perform head-to-toe exams onsite in a non-intrusive manner, helping reduce stress and trauma on the child and family. These medical assessments are provided free of charge to the family.
