POSITION TITLE:
Volunteer – Family Greeter

SUPERVISOR:
Volunteer Coordinator

BASIC FUNCTION:
Volunteers provide support to children and their families who visit Safe Passage and may be asked to assist the Staff with projects and tasks.

COMMITMENT:
Flexible

PUPOSE OF POSITION:
To welcome families and professionals to Safe Passage and assist the Staff to provide a child-friendly, private, comfortable and supportive environment for child victims of abuse.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Complete application and provide two telephone references as stipulated.

  • Be eighteen (18) years of age or older.

  • Possess no felony convictions, nor be listed on the Central Registry for Child Protection.

  • Must understand confidentiality and the personal commitment to maintain confidentiality at all times. Must sign a confidentiality statement.

  • Participate in a pre-service interview with the Volunteer Coordinator.

  • Have access to reliable transportation and to telephone.

SKILL/ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Keep all meetings and volunteer shift commitments as agreed upon.

  • Ability to establish rapport and create comfort level with child and accompanying adult.

  • Conduct oneself in a professional manner at all times when representing Safe Passage.

  • Maintain a positive and accepting demeanor when relating to others of varying backgrounds and life circumstances.

  • Keep confidential all information pertaining to clients and cases.

  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing

  • Willingness to volunteer within the guidelines, policies and standards of Safe Passage.

DUTIES:

  • Provide support to children and their families who visit Safe Passage.

  • Typical duties may include greeting and answering questions for families as they arrive at Safe Passage. Letting professionals know when their families have arrived.

  • Providing unobtrusive, age appropriate and companionable playroom supervision, providing snacks and playroom cleanup.

  • Becoming the obvious, visible presence in the waiting area for children and families.

  • Other tasks may include, copying, shredding, helping with mailings, assembling parent books, or assisting with general clerical duties.

There are many miscellaneous tasks which need to be completed to keep Safe Passage functioning smoothly – please mention to the Volunteer Coordinator or any staff member if you notice that something needs to be done.

Some Frequently Asked Questions….

What are Safe Passage’s hours of operation?

Safe Passage is open for regular services Monday through Friday, 8:00-5:00.

Who is the contact person for volunteers?

The Volunteer Coordinator is the primary contact person for all individuals volunteering at Safe Passage.

Who should I call if I have to reschedule a shift or have an emergency?

Please direct all questions and or changes to your volunteer schedule to the Volunteer Coordinator or any available staff member.

How should I dress when volunteering at Safe Passage?

Volunteers should dress comfortably enough to sit on the floor with a child, provide juice or a snack, and manage the occasional spill.

We want you to feel comfortable, but we also expect you to dress appropriately for the mission of Safe Passage.

Nice jeans or casual clothes are acceptable, unless attending court or otherwise instructed by supervising Safe Passage staff.

Are there any requirements for volunteering as a Family Greeter at Safe Passage?

Due to the nature and sensitivity of the investigations which take place at Safe Passage, we ask all Family Greeter volunteers to sign an Agreement of Confidentiality and agree to a criminal background check.
