Stop Family Violence Campaign and Safe Passage— The Mission of the Stop Family Coalition is to raise community awareness about family violence: how it can be prevented and abolished, and the community services available for victims and abusers.
Safe Passage Executive Director, Jacqueline Winston, is the current chairperson of the board.
Both literally and metaphorically, El Paso County’s family violence problem exists largely behind closed doors. Behind these doors, we have more reported cases of domestic violence than any other county in the state of Colorado. And, more reported cases of child abuse.
The key word here is “reported.”
For beyond the doors that hide these cases we know about, there is yet another closed door obscuring another reality, infinitely larger and more disturbing because it is unknown: the violence that never emerges into the light. Tragedies that are never seen. Screams that are never heard.
It’s time for all of us to open these doors and confront what is inside. That’s what the Open Doors Campaign is all about.
Doors are a strong, provocative symbol, loaded with context and meaning. We hide behind them; but we also open them to admit those we trust. We lock them against that which we fear; but we can also pass through them to get from where we are to where we wish to be.
People will confront real, life-size doors in different places all over town. Special events and initiatives will give local merchants and media partners opportunities to own a piece of this campaign and be part of the solution.
