Court Preparation for the Medical and Legal Professional in Child Abuse

This training is designed to cross train medical and legal professional at the same time allowing them to understand each other’s roles and to effectively team.

Medical Topics to be covered include:
• Role of the Child Abuse Medical Provider
• Abusive Head Trauma
• Abdominal and cutaneous traumas
• Guidelines and standards of care for possible SA victims
• Genital findings
• Testifying as a medical expert
• Hearsay
• Memory and suggestibility
• Mock trial for the medical professional

Legal Topics to be covered include:
• Trial tactics
• Ethical considerations
• Direct and cross examination of witnesses
• Preparing children for court
• Role of the Medical Provider
• Abusive head, abdominal and cutaneous trauma
• Child sexual abuse
• Hearsay
• Mock trial

Faculty for this training are Members of the staff of NDAA/APRI including Mary E. Sawicki, J.D., Project Consultation for NCPCA and Nancy E. O'Malley, Chief Assistant Alameda County District Attorney, will provide faculty to present the legal aspects of the training while medical experts such as Rich Kaplan, MD, Clinical Associate Professor at the University Of Minnesota School Of Medicine and Mark Hudson, MD., from Midwest Regional Children’s Advocacy Center a Project of the Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, will be provided by the Midwest Regional Children's Advocacy Center a Project of the Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. Judge Rosa Mroz, Superior Court Maricopa County, Phoenix, Arizona will preside over the mock trial.
